Greek Space Related Resources and Message

Each fall, after a determined period of time, first-years are allowed into Greek spaces for the first time, and Student Government and the Student & Presidential Committee on Sexual Assault (SPCSA) wanted to send out some reminders and important information for everyone as this time approaches.

The following is a list of important resources.

  • Good Sam: If assistance is needed for someone who is overly intoxicated or impaired by other drugs, students should call Safety and Security (SNS) at 603-646-4000 to “Good Sam” a friend to get them medical help. As a reminder, the “Good Samaritan” policy states that “student and/or organizations that seek assistance from [SNS] and/or emergency services and the individual assisted will not be subject to College disciplinary action with respect to violations of the Alcohol Policy and/or the use of other drugs.” You can find the full policy here.

  • Watch Your Drinks: It is good practice to count the number of drinks you have. Inebriation can take time to manifest, so we recommend drinking a cup of water after every drink. Further, if students are mixing substances, especially in addition to prescribed medications, your tolerance may be lower than expected.

    • Please be conscious of who poured your drink, where you set your drink, how much you ingest, and the actions of your friends around you. Trust your gut — if something feels off, reach out for help.

  • Look Out for Friends: Dartmouth thrives off the close communities we create. Keep in contact with your friends throughout the night, and check in on students, even if you don’t know them, if they seem like they need water, food, or medical attention.

  • Consent & Inebriation: As a reminder, intoxication reduces the ability to make informed decisions. Consent must be voluntarily and enthusiastically given, requires both verbal and nonverbal cues from both parties, and can be revoked at any time. If you or your friend experiences an act of violence, please see the resource sheet below.

The Student and Presidential Committee on Sexual Assault (SPCSA) has provided additional resources that we’ve attached below, which include how to reach WISE, Title IX, Sexual Assault Peer Alliance (SAPA), Student Wellness Center, Dartmouth Heath Services: Counseling, Chaplain, Hanover Police Department, Safety and Security, and additional self-care resources.

If you are unsure what to do or how to navigate resources, we recommend reaching out to an active SAPA—-our Sexual Assault Peer Alliance. SAPAs are trained in trauma-informed responding and can provide both support and help navigating the resources available to anyone who has been affected by gender-based violence.
